THERE IS A LESSON THAT YOUR STUDENTS CAN DO ALONG WITH THIS LESSON IF YOUR STUDENTS DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO A COMPUTER.

Renne Emiko Brock-Richmond, Local Artist and computer graphic

teacher at the Monterey Peninsula college. Renne is a multimedia Artist and has shown her work throughout the peninsula.

 

Renne will demonstrate how one can create their own personal pattern through both a computer or by cutting and pasting colored paper.

MATERIALS FOR ACTIVITY WITHOUT ACCESS OF COMPUTER

 

Colored construction paper

scissors

white paper

pencil

Colored Markers

Stencils

Straight edge

Encourage students to bring in examples of patterns.

 

INSTRUCTION:

 

*For those students with access to computers may just follow Renne within the lesson. She will take you from step to step.

 

*For those students without access to a computer may follow this activity which also will be covered by Renne during the televised lesson.

 

Start your lesson by introducing your students to the personal patterns and the sheet of suggested shapes in your teacher materials ; For some teachers you may wish to enlarge the shapes for younger students.

 

1.First, determine your pattern by choosing suggested shapes and creating a pattern from the personal patterns sheet. You may create your own by drawing your own shapes. * Ideas for different patterns can be found in fabric or wrapping paper.

 

2. Draw out your patterns.

 

3. Color shapes if you wish before cutting or draw your shapes out on colored construction paper.

 

4. Once you have completed your pattern, create a grid that can then be cut our for

your pattern. Determine the background. You may wish to use a colored background.
